This has been a busy and exciting term for Footlights! But then again when do we have a quiet one?!

Our Dance Academy kicked things off to a flying start with their performance in May. For the first time we amalgamated classes from each venue into themed performances. Each class got to showcase their own talents but they were also able to work together to make larger, more impressive, theatrical dance routines! Dances featured music from, ‘The Lion King’, ‘An American in Paris’, ‘Aladdin’ and ‘The Greatest Showman’.

Also in May our Nailsea Theatre Academy put on a fabulous performance of Disney’s Sleeping Beauty! This was the first production directed by Lisa, Naomi and Bev as a team. I think we all agree they did a fabulous job! Some brilliant and unexpected stars shone out on stage. A special shout out goes to our wicked witch! She adapted her whole stunning performance to be in a wheelchair after unexpected foot surgery two weeks before the performance. The show must go on as they say!

Little Notes and Vocal Dynamics also got in on the action with an amazing set of songs with beautiful harmonies and performances. Thanks to their dedicated musical directors Oli and Lucy these groups have gone from strength to strength.

Portishead Theatre Academy; after they rocked the Bristol Grammar School 1532 stage before Easter with Paws and Claws, have been working hard on excerpts from Bugsy Malone. This has been a fantastic challenge for this group, learning Charleston steps and challenging vocal numbers. They put on a fantastic performance to friends and parents at Portishead Youth Centre.

Nailsea Theatre Academy have taken on excerpts from Paws and Claws. In a fabulous term of hard work and lots of fun they have put together a brilliant performance to be shown to friends and families at Footlights Studios. This group has grown massively and we have heard solo speaking and singing from lots of new faces this term which has been a great treat!

Our lovely infants theatre academies in Nailsea and Portishead have blossomed this term. We have been working on performance skills, dance and singing. This is all coming together for a fun end of term performance of out “Fairytale Tea Party Show’. Close your eyes for the scary surprise at the end!

Little Notes have been working hard to present a selection of songs to their parents on the last day of term and Vocal Dynamics have been doing lots of work on technique and nuances of vocals for their performances such as complex dynamics and harmonies.

This term has also been brilliant for all of our dancers across the academy. Some of our senior Ballet students took RAD examinations. Tina and Ester’s modern and Jazz dancers have been working incredibly hard on their technique and performance in preparation for exams which will be coming up after Christmas all spurred on by the fantastic time they had performing in the Dance Academy Showcase in May.

To finish off the school year our Oz workshops working on excerpts from ‘The Wizard of Oz’ and ‘Wicked’ has been a great success. From Defying Gravity to following the yellow brick road all of our performers had an amazing time and did us proud! It was also brilliant to welcome Harry Haden Brown to the Footlights team as a new Musical Director!
Our group travelling for a performance of a life time at Disney have been pushing on with exhausting performances in the 30 degree heat! 4 costumes do make for sweaty work but it is something not to be missed. Follow our journey to Disneyland Paris and watch our performance on Facebook and Instagram – perhaps you could be joining us next time?

Next term is going to be just as exciting so watch this space! Our Ballet workshop starts in September and is going to be Alice in Wonderland. The official information is about to be sent out but drop us an e-mail to sign up so you don’t miss your chance!
See you next term, lots of love – Footlights x
